It is said that 46% of Ethiopia's population still remains excluded from electricity service.
It has been reported that electricity service has so far been able to reach only 54% of Ethiopia's population.
It was stated that providing electricity service to all citizens from the main grid is impossible due to various problems.
As we heard from officials at the Ministry of Water and Energy, the government has set a goal to ensure all Ethiopians have electricity in their homes by 2030 GC, which is five years from now.
However, it is said that since this goal cannot be achieved solely by connecting customers to the main grid, 65% will be covered by the main grid, and the remaining 35% will be covered by off-grid, small-scale power access alternatives.
Engineer Sultan Woli, State Minister of the Energy Sector at the Ministry of Water and Energy, stated that there are many reasons why complete coverage of Ethiopia's electricity network with conventional power options is not possible.
The official mentioned that capacity and financial constraints are a primary challenge, explaining that this is a common problem in many African countries.
In this regard, they said Ethiopia is actually in a better position than most.
The official stated that another factor is the dispersed and expansive settlement pattern found in Ethiopia, noting that delivering infrastructure in a country with vast and scattered settlements is very difficult.
They also said that Ethiopia's mountainous terrain is another contributing challenge.
These three factors make it difficult to deliver electricity service to everyone from the main grid.
Due to these challenges, it is stated that the 35% of the population who live far from conventional electricity infrastructure will access electricity through the construction of small-scale dams and renewable energy alternatives like solar power.
It was also reported that Ethiopia's electric utility has so far obtained 8 megawatts of power from the solar energy projects it has undertaken, and that more than 100 similar projects are under construction.
