Dr. Elisabeth W/Georgis at a glance...!!
#Ethiopia | (When Elisabeth was the Director of Addis Ababa University/Ethiopian Research Institute, I was also a colleague of the institute and I would like to share a few memories of Elisabeth from my memory) ;
Let's continue to remember the soul - let's continue to remember the soul of Elisabeth W/Georgis... ;
Elisabeth W/Georgis (Dr.) was one of the scholars invited by Professor Andreas Eshete to the prestigious Addis Ababa University during his presidency. Dr. Heran Serkeberhan, a generous and humble economist and Ethiopian historian who often accompanied her from the United States, is also mentioned.
Among the works she carried out during her tenure as the Director of the Ethiopian Research Institute, Elizabeth was a successful woman who organized large forums by inviting scholars to share their knowledge on Ethiopian; African and African American history and civilization; culture and heritage; politics and philosophy. In this way, she played a significant role in helping intellectual discourse flourish in the university.
Among the renowned African scholars who gave public lectures at the Ras Mekonnen Hall of the Ethiopian Research Institute through her and her colleagues' efforts are Prof. Ali Mazuri; Prof. Mahmud Mamdani.
From the country, Dr. Dejazmach Zewde Geslassie; Dejazmach W/Smaat; highly respected world laureate Med Meter Artist Afework Tekle; Elizabeth is known for facilitating the path for Ethiopians of all walks of life, including Mamma Zion Amdom Michael (Mamma Zion was the sister of J/L Aman Michael Andom, known as "Kodaw Trasu" among the military); Archbishop Abune Merha Christos... to share their knowledge with the generations.
Another thing I will never forget is that perhaps the first Menzuma and Neshida night in the history of the university was held at the institution's museum during the leadership of Dr. Elizabeth. To this day, the melodious voices of those Islamic religious leaders from the rural kebeles of Wollo and their Menzuma songs remain etched in my ears and heart.
For the past few years, Elsie has been a regular guest of the beloved Shegera journalist and editor of Sheger Cafe, Meazi, and has shared her knowledge with us without hesitation, along with her colleagues - Dr. Shimelis Bonsa; Assistant Professor Bekele Mekonnen; Simeneh Ayalew; Dr. Tekaleng W/Mariam...
Let me conclude my brief note on Dr. Elizabeth with an incident. Dr. Elizabeth recently became the Director of the Ethiopian Research Institute.
It was customary for most of us employees of the Ethiopian Research Institute of Addis Ababa University to leave work 15 or 30 minutes early. Then one day, when Elsie was appointed as the Director of the Institute, she was sitting near the exit door of the Institute and noticed that some employees were leaving work early; Soon, seeing most of the workers leaving, Elsie was furious and called the security guard and called her manager... "These workers should be fired immediately; I don't want them," she shouted and gave a strict order.
But this is Ethiopia, not America, so Elsie's order was not going to be carried out. It seems to me that as Elizabeth stayed, she got used to our weak work culture, and she let go of her shouting and anger....
As an aside; Elsie was pursuing her Ph.D. studies at Cornell University in the United States when she was the director of the institution; so at one point she had to go to America for a matter related to her studies. During her trip and stay, her beloved Dr. Yonas Admasu served as acting director in her place. The staff of the institution welcomed Dr. Jonas and said to us at the event we prepared for him;
"... Elizabeth is angry; you say she screams!!" I have received a complaint; I will also do this with this shadow - Dr. Jonas, waving his elegant cane that is always in his hand... I will also make you laugh with this shadow; I can also stab you, so be careful..." he smiled... But in Elizabeth's screams and anger, there was truth and principle that stood out...!!
Dr. Elizabeth W/Georgis, may your soul rest in peace!!
