Has the gas called "Miten Gas" been found trapped in the Fentale volcanic rock?
Mount Fentale has been in the news due to gas and ash emissions, with many questions being raised on social media.
The most notable among these is the gas known as "Miten Gas," which is said to be of great benefit to Ethiopia.
What kind of gas is this that has been trapped in the volcanic rock? We have asked experts for clarification.
For this news, information was provided by the head director of the Geophysics, Space Science, and Astronomy Institute at Addis Ababa University, Professor Elias Lewi (Dr.), who explained the need for further research to understand the cause of the eruption accurately.
The researcher clearly stated that such an eruption could occur, and similarly, they mentioned that this type of eruption is possible.
For example, he said, "The cause of the eruption could be due to the interaction of molten water within the earth with 'organic' substances trapped within."
On the other hand, the researcher told the BBC that the gas trapped within the volcanic rock in the area is likely due to fissures that have moved north to east within the gas.
The researcher pointed out that what is called "natural and formed gas" is found in the southeast regions of Ethiopia; if the eruption occurs in this area, it would be more appropriate to call it "Miten Gas."
However, he suggested that further research and observation are necessary before making any definitive statements.
Currently, the ash or "gas" seen in the Fentale area does not seem significant enough to warrant concern.
The researcher also mentioned that other gases like those found in the carbon dioxide oxides in Fentale are visible, suggesting that caution is more necessary than panic.
The 'New Scientist' website published satellite data from the European Union, showing that the Miten Gas from Fentale volcano can reach up to 58 meters in height.
John Stix, a professor of geology at McGill University in Canada, told New Scientist that while gases like carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide are common, the intensity of Miten Gas is unprecedented.
Given the eruptions in Ethiopia have been frequent, and among these, the Miten Gas eruption is considered beneficial for energy sources, according to experts, it's a blessing for Ethiopia.
However, the head director of the Geophysics, Space Science, and Astronomy Institute at Addis Ababa University, Professor Elias Lewi (Dr.), states that comprehensive research is needed to say this definitively.
