Seyfu Fantahun on Mekedonia Fundraising.

The Mekedonia fundraiser is a crowdfunding effort to support Mekedonia Charity Homes, an Ethiopian nonprofit dedicated to providing care for the elderly, mentally ill, and other vulnerable people. Based in Addis Ababa with branches across Ethiopia, Mekedonia offers shelter, food, clothing, and medical support to thousands who might otherwise be forgotten—think retired teachers, war veterans, and those with disabilities. It’s a grassroots operation, founded in 2010 by Benyam Belete, and it’s all about giving dignity to those society often overlooks.

The fundraiser itself has gained serious traction, especially through platforms like GoFundMe. One notable campaign, led by Ethiopian comedian Eshetu Meles in March 2023, pulled in over $1.6 million in just 24 hours—pretty impressive, right? The goal then was to finish a new 12-story shelter in Addis Ababa, specifically funding things like doors and windows. More recently, posts on X from mid-February 2025 show the total raised hovering around $639,792, aiming for a much bigger $20 million target. That’s only about 3% of the way there, but it’s steady progress. The money’s meant to keep expanding Mekedonia’s reach—think more beds, better supplies like diapers and blankets, and maybe even new facilities.

It’s not just a local thing either. The Ethiopian diaspora, especially in the U.S., has been a big driver, with folks like Leyat Endeshaw, a 16-year-old Ethiopian-American, raising smaller sums like $2,500 back in 2018. Even businesses, like TheEthiopianStore, chipped in with a 50,000 Birr donation tied to sales this past Christmas. The vibe is all about community—small donors, big hearts, and a mix of online buzz and real-world impact. They’ve also got creative, using local platforms like WegenFund and texting campaigns via Ethio Telecom to pull in contributions.
