The Addis Ababa light rail is not providing as much service as expected

#Ethiopia The Addis Ababa light rail, which was started at a cost of more than 475 million US dollars with the aim of solving the transportation problem of the city's residents, has not been able to solve the problem as expected.

It is observed that the limited number of trains running on the city's railway lines and frequent breakdowns are also the source of complaints.

It is said that less than 50 percent of the more than 40 trains that the transport service organization has are currently serving.

The train users that ETV talked to also raised their complaints about the service delivery of Addis Ababa light rail.

Taking this as a starting point, today's ETV New Day 'Country Affairs' preparation has put the issue of Addis Ababa light rail service on the agenda.

Addis Ababa Light Rail Transport Service Company's chief executive officer, Dr. Birhan Al-Badula (Dr.) during his meeting with ETV; He said that the city's light rail transport could not provide services as planned.

The CEO cites the lack of spare parts as the main reason for this.

Lack of standard repair workshops is another reason, he added.

They mention that the problem of time delay and disruption of the trains is related to this.

The chief executive who says that 5 trains have been repaired and put into service in the last 6 months due to the special attention given by the city administration. With this, they indicated that the number of trains providing services has been increased to 18.

They said that a lot of work needs to be done in order for the transport service to reach its target.

Head of Addis Ababa Transport Bureau Yabbal Addis said; He pointed out that when the work started, it was based on the construction and commissioning of light rail infrastructure, expansion of kilometer coverage and completion of standard maintenance workshops.

However, he pointed out that the reason for the problem is the failure to carry out other activities beyond the construction and commissioning of the light rail infrastructure.

He said that work is being done to increase the number of trains in service by providing maintenance workshops and spare parts.

The official stated that the government of Ethiopia and China are conducting a study on the matter. He said that the study will provide a solution to solve the problem permanently.
