At various times, animal diseases that occur pose a health risk to humans, and it has been revealed that 60% of animal diseases are transmissible to humans, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Dr. Wubishet Zewdie, the Chief Executive Officer of Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health at the Ministry, stated to Bsrat Radio and Television that protecting animal health is essential to safeguard animal production, productivity, and the safety of the community.
He explained that 75% of diseases transmissible from humans to animals are at a level that can be considered pandemic, and extensive work is being done to protect public health by maintaining animal health.
Dr. Wubishet noted that most of these diseases are transmitted through viruses and cited examples such as Ebola, Influenza, and Monkeypox as diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans.
Although there are currently no animal-to-human transmissible diseases in Ethiopia that have reached pandemic levels, there are diseases that could potentially be transmitted from neighboring countries. Therefore, preventive measures are being focused on, Dr. Wubishet added in his statement to our station.
To control animal diseases that are borderless and to enhance market access, the 26th World Animal Health Organization's African Regional Conference is set to take place in Addis Ababa.
The conference, under the theme "Ensuring Animal Health for Food and Nutrition Security and Public Health," will be held from January 27 to 30, 2017, in Addis Ababa.
