Input shortage is repeatedly mentioned as a major challenge for Ethiopia's construction sector.

We have heard that many contractors, struggling to obtain sufficient cement, iron, sand, etc., are even having difficulty paying salaries to their workers.

If we take cement alone, until recently, the annual demand was 20 million tons, while the supply was no more than 7 million tons.

Indeed, it has been reported that after the Lemi Cement Factory, which has a production capacity of 150 quintals per day, was inaugurated last Meskerem and began selling products in Tir, this supply and demand gap has narrowed.

It is said that the factory has supplied over 12 million quintals of cement to the market in just six months.

The Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure Development, for its part, stated that the problem with cement was not only about production and supply, highlighting that the market also had a gap.

The Ministry's Public Relations and Communication Executive told Ethio News that while there was a domestic shortage, it was being illegally exported abroad.

Mr. Ethio News said that currently, #Cement_Production supply is good in the market, but added that demand will undoubtedly increase in the future.

He stated that to meet this growing demand, additional factories need to be built.

Iron is another key input for the construction sector. It is known that Ethiopia largely imports this input.

Indeed, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, speaking last Sene while giving explanations to parliament members, stated that the production of domestic iron products in the completed budget had increased by 18 percent.

He also said that works have begun that will enable the full fulfillment of iron demand.

Studies show that iron ore deposits exceeding 1 billion tons are found in various parts of Ethiopia.

Mr. Ethio News informed us about what is being done to extract and utilize this iron ore.

The Executive said that they are working on research-supported tasks to prevent other sector inputs from continuing to be problematic.

The Ministry of Urban and Infrastructure Development stated that fulfilling construction inputs domestically will also solve the problem associated with price.
