Ban on Civil Society Organizations Lifted

The ban on civil society organizations has been lifted. 

The Civil Society Organizations Authority has announced that it has lifted the ban on four civil society organizations effective today. 

The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission has welcomed the authority’s move. 

It is worth noting that the Civil Society Organizations Authority has also suspended the Center for Rights and Democracy, Lawyers for Human Rights, the Ethiopian Human Rights Council, and the Ethiopian Human Rights Defenders Center. 

The authority said in a statement that it had suspended the organizations for violating the law during its monitoring and control activities. 

He stated in the statement that after completing the investigation into the banned organizations, the results will be discussed with the organizations and a consensus has been reached to work together in coordination and cooperation.

He also mentioned that consultations were held with the leaders of the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, the national human rights institution, regarding the ban and that the commission has submitted recommendations.

Following this, the authority announced that, in light of its determination to develop the sector, the consensus reached during the discussions with the banned organizations, and the recommendations made by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, the ban on the organizations has been lifted with a warning effective today. 

He also stressed that civil society organizations should work to protect the public interest by maintaining their independence and acting within the law, in accordance with the purpose for which they were established. 

The authority also stated that it will continue to strengthen the monitoring and control work it has started and work to ensure greater community benefits.

In related news, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission said that the lifting of the ban on civil society organizations is a good step.

It thanked the civil society organizations and other government bodies that were partners in the process, as well as the four civil society organizations. 

In this regard, the ECHR called on the ECHR to develop the practice of resolving problems that arise by prioritizing the protection of human rights and national interests through dialogue and dialogue.
