The rainfall in August and September is expected to cause landslides and flash floods in various parts of the country.

The Ethiopian Meteorological Institute has said this.

It also said that the areas of the country that benefit from the winter rains in August and September will experience above-normal and heavy rainfall.

The rainfall is expected to cause increased soil moisture, waterlogging in fields and flooding of crops in flood-prone areas, flash floods in urban and rural areas prone to flooding, frequent river overflows, and favorable conditions for the breeding and reproduction of malaria mosquitoes in areas prone to malaria.

It is also expected that the winter rains will tend to be recorded in the southwest, west, northwest and central regions of Ethiopia.

The institute said that the positive impact of the August and September rainfall will be to ensure adequate soil moisture for the harvest, and to provide sufficient moisture for planting a variety of crop options.

It will allow areas with low rainfall to collect and store rainwater.

It will also increase the water level in dams and enhance surface and groundwater resources, as well as various natural and man-made sources.

In the past two months, various parts of the country have experienced light to heavy rainfall, and in general, areas benefiting from the winter rains have received more than the normal rainfall and distribution, the institute said.

It also said that necessary precautionary measures should be taken immediately to minimize the negative impact of the continued heavy rainfall on various social and economic activities.
