The Ethiopian Intellectual Property Authority has stated that most innovation owners in Ethiopia are hesitant to register their works, leaving them vulnerable to theft.
The authority, which registers creative works and trademarks resulting from intellectual efforts, has said that only a small number of works are submitted for registration compared to what should be registered.
Although Ethiopia is a country with many innovation owners, the total number of registered creative works and trademarks so far does not exceed 51,500, according to the authority.
Of these, 34,000 are trademarks, with approximately 18,000 being domestic trademarks and 16,000 belonging to foreign companies operating in Ethiopia.
In the copyright sector (related to reproduction and related rights), 9,000 artistic works have been registered, while in the patent sector, 8,500 new or improved innovative works have been registered, according to Mr. Elias Mohammed, the Public Relations Expert at the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Authority.
Mr. Elias noted that due to the failure to register creative works, complaints arise about works being stolen or trademarks being copied. He added that they encourage those affected to take their cases to court to enforce their rights.
He further explained that, particularly in the business sector, many fail to register their trademarks. For example, while there are over 400,000 licensed traders in Addis Ababa alone, the total number of registered trademarks nationwide does not exceed 34,000.
The expert emphasized that failing to register works causes more harm than good. He advised that rather than relinquishing rights or facing prolonged court disputes, owners should obtain a certificate of ownership from the authority.
Additionally, the authority has stated that it does not grant certification to trademarks that violate community traditions and culture, infringe on others' rights, contain advertising-like content, or use generic names, and such submissions are rejected.
