It has been reported that birds present along the departure and landing routes of Bole Airport in Addis Ababa pose a significant and alarming risk of accidents due to their abundance and proximity to aircraft operations.
Urgent and sustainable long-term solutions have been urgently requested to address this growing concern.
Officials from the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority, airline executives, and other relevant stakeholders have conducted a detailed field observation to investigate the areas where these birds, which are considered a primary cause of potential airplane accidents, are commonly found.
Among the locations surveyed during the field observation are Adwa Park, situated in Bole Sub-City, Woreda 11; the dry waste processing site located near the Lemi Industrial Park; and various areas around Sheger City’s Furi Sub-City. These sites were identified as key hotspots where birds congregate in large numbers.
It has been noted during the investigation that birds are attracted to these areas in substantial quantities. The reasons for their proliferation include waste and byproducts discharged from various factories, slaughterhouses, the area commonly referred to as "Qoshe" (a local term for a waste dump), illegal cattle slaughtering sites, as well as sewage and leftover waste materials released from residential neighborhoods. These factors were observed and documented during the site visits.
Given that these locations lie directly along the flight paths used for takeoff and landing at Bole Airport, the presence of these birds represents a considerable and immediate threat to aviation safety. Consequently, it has been strongly emphasized that both urgent and enduring solutions are critically needed to mitigate the high risk of accidents caused by bird strikes in these areas.
