Nearly 60 percent of students in Amhara region are “out of school,” regional head of state announced

 

#Ethiopia | 59.8 percent of students in Amhara region are “out of school” this academic year, regional head of state Ato Arega Kebede said. 

 

The head of state also announced that 32 percent of schools in the region are “disrupting” their teaching and learning mission.

 

Ato Arega said this in his semi-annual performance report presented at the regular session of the Amhara Regional Council, which began on Tuesday, February 4, 2017, and continues today. Among the issues that Ato Arega raised in his report is the current state of education in the region.

 

The number of students currently “participating in the learning process” in the Amhara region is 2.78 million, the head of state said in a report to the council. 

 

Ato Arega explained that this figure only covers 40.2 percent of the students who were supposed to be in school in the region. 

 

“It is necessary to explain to the esteemed council that the remaining 59.8 percent of students are out of school,” the regional head of state emphasized at the end of yesterday’s meeting.
