The Oromia Transport Agency has stated that brokers, who are causing disruptions for service users, are being removed from all terminals across the region.
It has also said that measures have been taken, including suspending transport associations that have prevented vehicles from entering service, even to the extent of removing them from operations.
The Oromia Transport Agency has been conducting strict oversight since this week, based on suggestions from the community, targeting transport service providers, its own employees, and terminal areas.
The agency’s deputy head, Mr. Ibrahim Haji, confirmed that various issues raised through complaints, including overcharging beyond tariffs and overloading, have been observed during the oversight process.
He noted that employees who failed to properly fulfill their responsibility to regulate transport services, as well as transport associations that prevented vehicles from entering service, were identified during the oversight.
Mr. Ibrahim stated that these associations have been excluded from transport services as a result of the measures taken.
He further explained that brokers at various terminals, who have been obstructing transport services, have been identified, adding, “We will ensure they no longer operate moving forward.”
Mr. Ibrahim also mentioned that actions, including termination, have been taken against over 200 employees assigned to oversight duties who failed to fulfill their responsibilities. Additionally, more than 600 brokers have been removed from various terminals.
On another note, Mr. Ibrahim acknowledged complaints about taxi and bajaj drivers increasing tariffs following recent fuel price hikes, saying, “We have made adjustments ourselves and sent them to the relevant authorities just today.” He added that the agency will continue to strengthen its oversight efforts.
