The Sports Festival should be held with peace, friendship and solidarity in mind: Professor Berhanu Nega

The Minister of Education, Professor Berhanu Nega, said this during the opening of the University Students Sports Festival at Addis Ababa Science and Technology University. 

The Minister, who pointed out that mental development and physical development are linked, also indicated that the work started on the quality of education by integrating sports and knowledge should be continued. 

He also indicated that schools from primary to secondary level in the general education sector are organized into leagues and are already holding competitions. 

The State Minister of Culture and Sports, Mekiu Mohamed, said that the organization of the University Sports Festival will help expand sports facilities, create good relations between universities and students, promote sports participation and create a conducive learning and teaching environment. 

The organizer of the competition, Addis Ababa Science and Technology University President Dr. Dereje Geda, said that the competition was organized in a short time to ensure the continuity of the sports festival held under the theme "Sports for Unity and Development". 

According to the Ministry of Education, 2,500 athletes from 49 universities will participate in this competition, which will be held from January 17 to 27, 2017, in five sports.
