Africa’s First Electric Airplane Air Taxi Transport

Ethiopian Airlines has announced that the air taxi service, which will be implemented in Africa for the first time using electric-powered airplanes, is expected to make a significant contribution to enhancing connectivity among African countries.

The technology, named “Midnight,” has the capacity to carry four passengers and can reduce a one-hour car journey to just 10 minutes, as explained by the airline to EBC Dotstream.

It was also noted that the air taxi service strengthens the efficiency already being demonstrated by the Midnight airplane in cargo operations.

The service is said to propel Ethiopian Airlines, a source of pride for Africa, one step forward while positioning the continent as a commercial hub.

To implement the service, a $30 million agreement has been signed between Ethiopian Airlines and Archer Aviation. The agreement includes Archer Aviation providing not only expertise exchange but also flight, technical, and IT specialists.

“Africa has the potential to adopt such technology, and Ethiopian Airlines is the right choice to implement this vision,” said Adam Goldstein, CEO of Archer Aviation.

The agreement is also highlighted as a critical step in reducing air pollution.
