The efforts made to stop the conflict that was occurring in the border areas of the two regions are yielding results in stopping the conflict in the area, it was stated during the meeting of the Federal and Regional Governments' Joint Committee established to stop the conflict. The Joint Committee, which is headed by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Temesgen Tiruneh, and consists of senior leaders of the federal and two regional states, held a meeting on 18/06/2017 and reviewed the work done at the technical committee level and set directions for further work.
Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh expressed his gratitude to the leaders of the two regions and the Technical Committee for the results achieved in the past months, noting that the work done in stopping the fighting, holding peace talks at all levels, and clarifying the information of the displaced is fruitful and will create a basis for further work. A common understanding has been reached that the work done so far at the Technical Committee level to stop the conflict and establish lasting peace should be strengthened and made sustainable.
Minister of Peace Mohamed Edris, for his part, recalled that the conflict between the two communities should not have occurred if the two communities have lived together for many years, have social closeness, and have developed peace values. He added that the current closeness should be taken as an opportunity and if everyone works with a sense of ownership and strives to resolve problems by seeing the other community as their own.
Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh noted that although the results achieved through the joint efforts so far have been positive, there are still unresolved issues, especially the gaps in ensuring that the people take ownership of the peace-building work, the lack of speed in implementing joint efforts, and some occasional conflict-provoking issues, which should be addressed in order to ensure that our efforts to establish lasting peace continue. He also stated that all stakeholders should work diligently and diligently to ensure that the displaced people return to their homes in the shortest possible time.
Finally, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh stressed that the holy month of Ramadan, which is of great importance to both peoples, should be used to overcome the gaps and strengthen people-to-people relations and create peace.
