It was reported that Ethiopia earned more than 12 million birr from tourists who visited its parks in the last six months.

The Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority has announced that Ethiopia earned over 12 million birr from foreign and domestic tourists who visited its parks during the first six months of the 2017 fiscal year. The head of the wildlife protection desk of the authority, Daniel Warqu, told Bisrat Radio and Television that in the first half of the year, Ethiopia received 12.4 million birr from visitors from various domestic and foreign countries.

White Grass National Park is among the most visited. In the past six months, 21,350 domestic and foreign visitors visited the park, with 14,189 of them being local visitors.

Similarly, Northern Mountains National Park, along with Mago, Bale, Abijata-Shala Lake, and Awash National Park, also saw significant visitor numbers. Although it is noted that this income was generated in just half a year, it is stated that Ethiopia has recorded a very low result in terms of its potential wealth in this sector.

According to Daniel Belfat, one reason for the security crisis in some areas of Ethiopia is that popular destinations like Northern Mountains National Park, which attract many tourists, have faced challenges that hinder their recovery. He emphasized that in order to stimulate tourism in these areas, Ethiopia must leverage the benefits it deserves from this sector. Mr. Daniel added that efforts are being made to facilitate the recovery of tourism.
