"Providing a loaf of bread for breakfast the day after the students' daily food rate is 100 is not an improvement," stated Mekelle University students.

Yesterday, reports emerged of a riot at the university related to the revised food menu, which resulted in injuries to students and damage to property.

The source of the disagreement lies in the claim that "the university is implementing it inappropriately" following the revised guidelines of the Ministry of Education, which mandate a uniform food menu across all universities.

Students at the university told Tikvah Ethiopia that since Saturday, 12/04/2017, only a loaf of bread has been served for breakfast.

"Previously, two loaves of bread were offered to students for breakfast, although the amount was very small. Now, it is not an improvement to provide just one loaf for breakfast, especially considering the daily food rate for students is 100," they criticized.

Students from both the main campus and the Adi Haqi campus, unhappy with this food provision, reported that they were beaten and arrested for protesting.

A member of the Tikvah Ethiopia Mekelle family, who wished to remain anonymous, spoke with an employee of the Arid student restaurant at Mekelle University.

This employee explained, "The commotion started at breakfast when the two loaves that were previously served were reduced to one, with the claim that the weight had been increased. The students argued that the bread was the same and that no additional weight had been added. They requested a meeting with university management."

"However, when the president of the university did not respond, the frustrated students began to break dining tables, food utensils, glasses, and other items, though they did not harm the restaurant staff," he continued.

It is reported that the riot, which began at the Arid Campus during breakfast, spread to the Adi Haqi Campus and caused damage to university property until dinner time.

The State Police Commission has dispatched security forces to the campuses.

Consequently, it was reported that students were beaten during clashes with the police.

At both campuses, it appears that property remains damaged and has not yet been cleared.

The riots at Mekelle University's Arid and Adi Haqi campuses have now completely subsided.

In response to Tikvah Ethiopia's request for an explanation regarding the riots, the university's communications department stated, "Please wait for an official statement regarding the origin and resolution of the issue to be released in the media."
