African Catholic Bishops’ Conference declares days of fasting and prayer for reconciliation and peace in Africa

#Ethiopia | The annual ordinary session of the Standing Committee of the African Bishops’ Conference focused on the current state of peace in the continent.

The conference stated that Africa, although a continent of great natural resources and prosperity, is currently a source and center of conflict and a cause of loss of life and property due to the loss of Christian hope.

In particular, the current conflicts, displacement and instability in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Mozambique, Sudan and many other African countries demonstrate the desire of powerful countries to control the stolen wealth of their countries.

The conference called on African countries, especially those in conflict, to express their solidarity and prayer for unity: “We have not forgotten you! The Church has not abandoned you! We are with you; We pray and continue to cry out for justice, peace and reconciliation; we echo the voice of our Holy Father,” he said in a message issued on February 7, 2017.

“In particular, the Jubilee Year in which our Church is celebrating should be a time for us to renew our faith in God, strengthen our unity and seek the path of salvation,” he said.

In line with the call of the Catholic Church to walk together, the African Catholic Bishops’ Conference has called on all parishes, dioceses, monasteries and the entire faithful to fast and pray for reconciliation and peace in Africa from February 24 to 26.

In response to this call, the Ethiopian Catholic Church has called on all faithful to participate in fasting and prayer and to become instruments of peace.
