The Reporter newspaper reported that four other candidates have also been nominated.

Reporter reports that residents of Bonga town, where he was born, came to Addis Ababa and presented the complaint they signed against Berhanu to Meles Zenawi, who was then Prime Minister.

Following this, "a report submitted by an inquiry committee established by the former Prime Minister led to his removal from the position of Minister of Cabinet Affairs and member of the EPRDF Executive Committee," the Reporter reported 10 years ago.

In addition to his responsibilities in government institutions, Ato Berhanu was a member of the House of People's Representatives following the disputed 1997 elections.
