Women’s participation in key sectors remains low, says Minister of Women and Social Affairs Ergoge Tesfaye (PhD) Addis Ababa, March 3, 2017 (FMC) The participation of women in key sectors of innovation and technology is still low, the Minister of Women and Social Affairs said.
The Ethiopian delegation, which is participating in the 69th International Conference on Gender Equality and the Advancement of Women in New York, participated in a discussion on women and green innovation organized by the International Industrial Development Organization and the Government of Austria on the sidelines of the conference.
In her speech at the discussion, the Minister explained that Ethiopia is taking great strides in the fields of manufacturing, agro-processing and energy and is at a critical juncture in its industrial transformation.
She explained that policies, strategies and long-term development plans are conducive to achieving the desired results in the sector.
The 10-year development plan, which sets a goal to build a sustainable and secure economy centered on innovation, has made gender and inclusiveness a key pillar.
He also noted that the effort to build a sustainable industrial sector is difficult to achieve without the full participation of women.
According to the ministry, Ethiopian women play a significant role in the country’s economy, from small and medium-sized businesses to innovative agriculture and textile sectors.
However, he said that women’s participation in critical innovation and technology sectors is still low.
He pointed out that even women-led businesses that prioritize sustainability, social impact, and building a secure economy face financial and investment constraints.
If we want to build an industry that moves with the times, we must empower women not only to benefit from industrial products but also to be leading innovators, decision-makers, and leaders.
They said that our industrial policies need to be inclusive and well-aligned with gender equality goals, create an enabling environment for women entrepreneurs, encourage them, and further strengthen the relationship between technology producers, suppliers, and users.
To this end, they called on the government, international institutions, civil society organizations, and the private sector to work together in coordination and collaboration.
