Enkutatash is the Ethiopian and Eritrean New Year celebrated on Meskerem 1 of the Ethiopian calendar, which corresponds to September 11 (or September 12 in a leap year) of the Gregorian calendar. It marks the start of the new year with large celebrations, traditional meals such as injera and wat, flower-giving customs, and singing of New Year’s songs. The name “Enkutatash” means “gift of jewels,” commemorating the return of the Queen of Sheba to Ethiopia, whose followers welcomed her with gifts and jewels. The holiday is both a cultural and social event, with bonfires lit at night to bid farewell to the old year and greet the new one with hopes for peace and prosperity. It is celebrated widely by Ethiopians regardless of religion and also holds significance as the beginning of the Ethiopian calendar year, which is about 7-8 years behind the Gregorian calendar due to different datings of the Annunciation of Christ. The festival coincides with the end of the rainy season and the blooming of yellow daisies (‘adey abeba’), symbolizing renewal and new life
