The Holy One Who Shut the Heavens and Consumed with Fire.
King Ahab and his wife, Queen Jezebel, closed the churches and opened temples of idols, beginning to kill prophets and priests. The prophet Elijah, who lived during their time, warned them, but they did not listen. At that time, Elijah declared, "As the Lord, the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word." He shut the heavens, and for three years and six months, no rain fell. Elijah challenged the people, asking how they could worship Baal, the idol they called their god, while still enjoying the blessings provided by the Lord. He carried a message of religious purity, condemning their hypocrisy.
Queen Jezebel, in particular, was notorious for seizing the property of the poor, such as Naboth's vineyard, and having him killed. Elijah confronted her, saying, "The blood of Naboth will not rest upon you, and even the dogs will lick your blood." Driven by hatred and malice, Jezebel had 900 prophets and priests killed. However, one hundred of them were saved by Obadiah, a servant of Ahab, who hid them in a cave. Elijah, born around 900 BC, is revered in the Holy Church as one of the greatest prophets. At his birth, four radiant beings appeared, and his home was filled with light as they swaddled him in a fiery cloth. His parents shared this miraculous event with the prophets and priests of their time.
Eventually, Elijah confronted Ahab and Obadiah, saying, "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal is God, follow him." He challenged the priests of Baal to prepare a sacrifice, and when they called upon their god, no fire came from heaven to consume it. Elijah mocked them, saying, "Perhaps your god is asleep or busy; shout louder!" Later, when Elijah prepared his sacrifice and prayed to the Lord, fire descended from heaven, consuming the offering, the wood, and even the stones, licking up the water in the trench. The Holy Church honors this great prophet for three special graces: his chastity, his asceticism (he ate very little, only enough to sustain his body), and his detachment from worldly things (he lived apart from people).
Elijah, the wondrous prophet who shut the heavens and called down fire, is a remarkable figure. As recorded in 1 Kings 17:2, his story shows that he was taken up to the realm of the living in a chariot of fire and horses of fire. In the end, he will return during the time of the Messiah and suffer martyrdom. His feast day is celebrated on Tahsas 1. The saints of our time, having renounced the material world, are blessed with spiritual gifts. Let us partake in their blessings by supporting their monasteries and celebrating their
