Modern Village Transforms Pastoralist Lifestyle

A modern model pastoralist village has been built for the poor and vulnerable pastoralists living in the Shebelle Zone of the Somali Region, near Gode town, which has transformed their lifestyle.

The Ministry of Irrigation and Lowland Development constructed the model modern pastoralist village; it is a modern residential building that is well-equipped, fully furnished, and has electricity and water services. 

Various buildings have been built nearby to provide education, health, government and other services. 

The construction aims to support the poor and vulnerable pastoralists; in addition to housing, the modern pastoralist village includes an administrative building, meeting rooms, offices, markets and a modern processing plant for camel milk.

The poor and vulnerable pastoralists who were living in the Shebelle Zone of the Somali Region who moved into this modern and model village said that they now have a better life.

Herder Suwal Ahmed Mohamed, a resident of the Shebelle Zone of the Somali Region, recalls that he and his seven family members used to live in a small, unsanitary shelter in a remote area. 

Like herder Suwal Ahmed Mohamed, a female pastoralist, Eblashe Ahmed also used to live in a nearby shelter.

She says that her children did not have access to education in their neighborhood. She points out that their livelihood depended on the activities of their camels; she recalls that she used to move from place to place in search of grass for the animals and make a mobile home.

But now, both she and her herdsman Suwal Ahmed Mohamed have been moved into the modern village; They say they are happy with this.

The villages, which are fully equipped with household items and complete infrastructure, have created a comfortable living environment for the villagers, said Suwal Ahmed Mohamed and Eblashe Ahmed. 

Eblashe, who says that they never had water and electricity before, explains that now many services are provided in the modern residential village. 

Suwal Ahmed Mohamed, who says that they have found a modern house that they have never seen before, said that he and his family have found sufficient and complete rooms, as well as a clean home and a nearby school and necessary services.
