Amsalu Tsegaye Kassau, an Ethiopian by birth, has filed to run for the Aurora City Council in the United States.
Amsalu won a by-election last year and is currently the city’s third-highest-ranking official.
Amsalu, who moved to the United States from Ethiopia 18 years ago, has served in various capacities in the city over the years.
He won a by-election last year against 37 other candidates for the Aurora City Council, and is now serving as a council member in the city of Aurora, which has a population of over half a million.
There are an estimated 40,000 Ethiopians and Ethiopian-born people living in the US state of Colorado, and most of them live in the Aurora City Council, where Amsalu is a member.
Amsalu, who told us that Ethiopians do not have much experience in participating in American politics, said that we have suffered a lot because of this.
He said that Ethiopians who have children in America are facing many difficulties and that getting involved in politics gives them the opportunity to participate in decisions that are made regularly.
He said that it is also necessary to participate in American politics to find people who can explain the truth about Ethiopia to American officials on important issues.
Amsalu, who is running as a candidate in the council elections to be held in three months, called on Ethiopians in the area to register and vote for the election.
