The Repi dry waste power plant is said to be generating around 249 million birr annually while continuing its operations.
It has been reported that the power plant is unable to operate at full capacity due to a shortage of spare parts.
The agency has stated that the information claiming the #Repi_dry_waste_power_plant has stopped operating is false.
Eshetu Lema (Dr.), the Director General of the Addis Ababa City Sanitation Management Agency, said that due to the low production capacity of the Repi dry waste power plant, the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation is incurring losses, making the operation unprofitable. He noted that this has led to a complaint, and as a result, the city administration is paying 249 million birr annually.
The Director General also stated that over the past six months, 865 million birr has been generated by converting waste into a resource. While efforts are being made to turn waste into wealth and generate even more revenue, he highlighted a significant gap in sorting and managing waste effectively.
On his part, Engineer Wendimu Seta, the Chief Executive of Addis Ababa City, pointed out that the public’s noticeable gap in sorting waste needs improvement. He added that, beyond the country’s existing dry waste power plant, another waste-to-energy facility is being constructed to not only keep the environment clean but also transform waste into a source of wealth.
