Ethiopia has completed its preparations for the African Free Trade Agreement and is exporting its first round of products today. 

 

It is said that it will join the continental free trade area by exporting meat, vegetables and fruits. 

 

So, what are the opportunities and impacts of entering this trade for local traders, consumers and the trade system in general?

 

Ashagre Zewdu (PhD), an associate professor at the Department of Food and Nutrition at Addis Ababa University and a board member of the Ethiopian Consumer Protection Organization, said that this process will allow domestic consumers to access products in an alternative, better quality and at a better price. 

 

He said that consumers will undoubtedly benefit since various countries import their products duty-free. 

 

He said that in order for Ethiopia to export its products in large quantities and compete with other countries, it will be necessary to work well in terms of quality and other criteria. 

 

He said that domestic traders may also face the challenge of being stuck in this for a while. 

 

He explained that it is expected of a country to regularly review and correct the results and problems.
