A deal has been signed to produce and supply an energy storage system to prevent power outages in Ethiopia.

The agreement was signed between a local private sector technology company called Inda Power Group and a Chinese technology company called China Southern Green Technology (CSGT).

We have heard that this Chinese technology company has developed a battery that can store electricity and release power during power outages.

The battery is powered by renewable energy, said Hamde Ibrahim, Corporate Communications Manager of Inda Power.

He mentioned that the technology will provide relief to many, especially to the rural residents of the country who have not yet seen light, without the need to lay electricity lines.

According to the agreement, the battery will be supplied to the Ethiopian Electric Service upon request after the battery is manufactured and installed.

In this way, the project will be divided into three phases and will be implemented over a four-year period from 2026 to 2030, in line with Ethiopia’s ambitious goal of providing electricity to all its citizens by 2030, said Ato Idris Adem, founder and CEO of Edan Power Group.

So far, only 5.2 million of its total customers are connected to the main grid, Ethiopian Electric Service told us.

This new technology is being developed with the private sector to provide access to renewable energy, especially for those who are far from the grid and those who do not have access to electricity, according to Ato Farid Abdusalam, Director of Network Infrastructure and Excellence of the service.

Chinese companies that were previously involved in trade and investment are now turning their attention to electricity following the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which will help strengthen diplomatic relations between the two countries, said Ato Dejene Abera, Director of the Middle East and Asia Pacific at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The supply of energy storage batteries varies between cities and rural areas; in rural areas without grids, the battery provides electricity; in urban areas, it is said that it can provide electricity when the electricity is cut off.
