Clustering Horticulture

#Ethiopia | The agricultural and horticultural development sector is one of the backbones of the agricultural sub-economy. The sector is working in coordination with the regions to carry out multi-faceted development activities focused on crop production, vegetable and fruit production, plant protection, and agricultural extension systems.

According to Meles Mekonnen (PhD), State Minister for Agriculture and Horticulture Development at the Ministry of Agriculture, the sector is working hard to achieve the goals of ensuring food and nutrition security, creating employment opportunities, replacing foreign products with domestic products, increasing the supply of foreign products, increasing foreign exchange earnings, and satisfying industrial needs.

The Minister of State stated that during the current 2016/17 crop season, 1,706,540 hectares of horticulture have been cultivated and 210,962,604.64 cu/l of produce has been collected, and 880,629.34 hectares of horticulture have been cultivated and 100,350,150 cu/l of produce is expected to be produced under summer irrigation. He added that there is a good start to the cluster development of horticulture.

He stated that out of the 880,629.34 hectares of horticulture and fruit cultivation cultivated under summer irrigation, 38,844.88 hectares have been cultivated under clusters.

Among the regions with extensive activity in cluster cultivation of vegetables and fruits, Sidama region is the first with 45.3 percent cluster cultivation, while Southern Ethiopia and Tigray regions have the best performance in horticulture cluster development, respectively. The State Minister urged all regions to continue to strengthen the work of cluster cultivation of vegetables and fruits.

Cluster cultivation of horticulture creates a favorable environment for improving input supply to farmers, providing timely and consistent access to extension services, creating marketable products and creating market alternatives, and linking them with processing industries, and generally increasing production and productivity.
