press release
It is necessary to give this press release in order to express the negative impact of the changes in the structure of institutions proposed on the basis of the process of making Addis Ababa University autonomous, so that the issue can get attention as soon as possible.
Mainly, we, former students, alumni and friends of the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) located in Addis Ababa University, want the administrative independence of the educational institution to be protected and the steps taken by the university to be based on transparency, inclusiveness and information. To help other relevant government bodies understand the seriousness of the issue We are collecting signatures.
This signature collection process takes into account the many achievements of the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS). The institute has been actively and qualitatively performing all the activities expected from the institute, including research, teaching, active participation in policy issues of national importance and creating international connections. In the past 15 years, the educational department has taught citizens of 50 countries in its various programs in Africa alone, and has been able to graduate large national and continental influential leaders including the Honorable Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed.
In addition, the institution coordinates the TANA FORUM, an international security consultation forum with a board led by leaders of various African countries. The forum gathers regional leaders, ministers and scholars in Bahir Dar city and conducts annual consultations; For example, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, recently former Ghanaian President John Mahama and former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta are serving as members of the Board of Tana Forum.
In addition, believing that there is a need for peace and security management education in the field, he has had the opportunity to teach other senior peace and security leaders and experts, including Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, by designing a special Masters program for professionals engaged in implementation. It has effective and meaningful collaborations with domestic and foreign institutions, for example, recently it is working with Defense Army College and Staff Command College to publish research results and start a joint education department.
Although the African Union Commission is located in our city, there is no department in the university that studies the institution and the working process of it in a different way. To fill these gaps, the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) is currently the only institution that conducts an annual review of the African Union's peace and security architecture. He plans to open the African Union Research Center in the future. The institute's approach combines education with research, so it is known for facilitating platforms where students can meet experts in the field during education.
It is true that one of the main reasons that enabled the institution to carry out the above-mentioned activities effectively was the institution's autonomy. The autonomous structure of this institution is different from national; It has made the biggest contribution to easily establish relations with continental and international institutions, and it has made their relations with the institution reliable and easy for the partners.
Despite this fact, the structure of the newly studied Addis Ababa University was not taken into consideration of the great impact that this famous institution had on the national and continental level, and it was set up along with other educational departments in a way that would affect the future activities of the institution.
Therefore, we, former students, alumni and partners of the Institute of Peace and Security Studies (IPSS), stand by the institute saying that the process of autonomy should strengthen each department and not divide institutions improperly and prevent research institutions from teaching. Rather than hiding departments in large colleges and cutting down on unnecessarily complex administrative bureaucracy, decentralization needs to be brought down by creating smaller institutions with administrative independence such as the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS).
Therefore, we request the Addis Ababa University Board, the top management of the university and all those concerned to bring autonomy down to the lower level of education and to create many strong institutions like IPSS, to link research and teaching activities, and to do all that is expected to continue institutional recognition (BRAND) and connections.
