The traditional landscape of Gedeo

#Ethiopia The culture and tourism department of the zone said that it is being done to register the cultural landscape of Gedeo in the southern region of Gedeo by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

 

According to Joseph Maru (Dr.), the head of the Department of Culture and Tourism of the zone, told Fana Broadcasting Corporation, experts and stakeholders of the zone are participating in registering the Gedeo landscape with UNESCO.

 

He mentioned that the Gedeo community's land management is one of the UNESCO-registered land management, and said that it includes historical artifacts, plant stones, cave inscriptions, and forests that are managed only in traditional ways.

 

He pointed out that local and foreign experts are participating in the registration process and that the documents required for registration by UNESCO have been prepared.

 

He explained that there are about 10,000 plant stones in the zone that are said to be the oldest in East Africa, and these have been nominated to be registered by UNESCO.

 

The official said that the economic value they give to the country when heritage is registered is high and the process of registering the landscape has been completed.

 

He said that it is expected that the cultural landscape will be registered at the 45th UNESCO Conference held in Riyadh, United Arab Emirates from 5th of August to 5th of September 2016.

 

Noting that it is not enough to register heritages, he said that the cultural landscape of Gedeo should be protected in a proper way so that the people can benefit from it.
