House of People’s Representatives Approves Two Loan Agreements

The House of People’s Representatives, in its 1st special session held today, approved two loan agreements signed by the government with the International Development Association by a majority vote.
The loan agreements are said to be used to strengthen the financial sector and improve government services.
State Minister of Finance Eyob Tekaleng (Dr.) briefed the House on the loan agreements.
He said that the $700 million loan agreement signed by Ethiopia with the International Development Association will further improve the soundness and competitiveness of the financial sector.
He said that the macroeconomic reform will increase the capital capacity of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia; the loan will also help modernize the operations of the Development Bank of Ethiopia.
He also said that Ethiopia has been reducing its debt burden over the past four years.
Ethiopia and the International Development Association have also presented a $70 million loan agreement to the parliament for the implementation of the Modern Public Service Reform Project, EZA reported.
The parliament approved the loan agreements by a majority vote after discussing them.
