Ethiopia has indicated that its ability to supply electricity to additional countries is considered one viable way to alleviate the existing regional energy shortage.

It has been reported that Ethiopia earned more than $118 million from the sale of electricity to Kenya and Djibouti in the completed 2017 fiscal year.

It is recalled that Ethiopia sold seven percent of the total power generated that year to foreign markets, earning revenue from selling five percent to Kenya and two percent to Djibouti.

According to what we heard from Dr. Sultan Wali, State Minister of the Energy Sector at the Ministry of Water and Energy, Ethiopia sells its electricity to neighboring countries at a low price. He stated that there is a specific reason for this.

He said that beyond the revenue from electricity sales, the interconnection of regional countries through power lines contributes to greater stability in the area.

He further explained that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is an African project, meaning that surrounding countries will also be able to obtain power at an equitable price.

He also indicated that the power line connecting Ethiopia and Sudan is planned to extend to Egypt and beyond, reaching Jordan and Europe.
