The Revenue Office has stated that the assets of 62 individuals who owe tax debts and are unwilling to pay will be seized to offset their outstanding debts.
The Addis Ababa Revenue Office, in collaboration with the Financial Intelligence Administration, has repeatedly said it is pursuing individuals and institutions that have not paid their tax debts.
The office, which aimed to collect over 11 billion birr in unpaid taxes accumulated since last year, reported that it has recovered more than 6.4 billion birr in the first half of this year. It added that efforts to pursue the remaining 4.6 billion birr in #tax_debts from non-payers are ongoing.
Of the unpaid amount, 3.2 billion birr is owed by 62 individuals who, despite repeated calls to settle their debts, have been unwilling to pay and have been barred from leaving the country.
Mr. Sewunet Ayele, the Public Relations Director of the office, stated that their assets will now be seized and used to offset the unpaid debts.
Additionally, Mr. Sewunet noted that the remaining 1.3 billion birr of the total tax debt is owed by other individuals, mostly traders, who will also face similar measures. He mentioned that the process of identifying them is ongoing.
He also explained that traders found evading taxes or operating without receipts are being penalized.
Mr. Sewunet further revealed that over 111 billion birr in revenue tax has been collected in the current fiscal year.
He pointed out that when taxpayers are faced with high tax demands, they tend to disappear rather than appeal to the tax grievance office.
The office has stated, "Instead of doing this, if you take your case to the tax grievance office, I am ready to provide a solution."
