"I Don't Touch What Belongs to Others"

This morning, I heard a story on Sheger Radio 102.1 that made me happy, so I decided to share it with you.

The presenter was journalist Haile.

#Ethiopia | In the Gerji area, a father and son found some lost money (911 dollars and 11 birr). Along with the money, there was also a copy of a passport. They decided to return it to the owner and searched for the person using the name on the passport. They couldn’t find them. From the photo, they realized the owner was a foreigner.

For two full years, they searched for the owner, asking around and showing the photo. Everyone in the neighborhood told them, "Why are you troubling yourselves? Use the money!" But they replied, "We don’t touch what belongs to others." During this time, their son fell ill and was hospitalized. He needed an operation, but they had no money.

The son asked, "Father, should we use the foreigner’s money to treat me?" The father replied, "Allah does not allow us to heal through dishonesty. If it is His will, He will save you through His wisdom." And indeed, the problem passed.

Recently, they found the person who had lost the money. He was Indian. They returned the 911 dollars and the additional 11 birr. Imagine what he must have felt!

The journalist tracked down both the family and the owner and interviewed them.

As I was listening to this story on my way to work this morning, my heart warmed at the kindness of Ethiopians.

Sometimes, when I hear stories like this, I feel happy knowing that the traditional Ethiopian sense of honesty and integrity hasn’t disappeared.

What struck me most about the report was this: "Ethiopians living abroad who heard the story collected 200 dollars and sent it to the father and son!" While the family was happy about this, I wasn’t as pleased. Instead of focusing on their kindness, we should be highlighting the honesty of people like them!

Many people have found lost money and returned it, but this case is different. For two full years, despite their poverty and struggles, they sought to return it to its rightful owner!!

May Allah bless you abundantly for your faith.

You made my day.
