#Ethiopia Hirut Bekele, a veteran singer who was a former member of the police army orchestra, has passed away due to illness.
Hirut Bekele was one of the few female artists produced in Ethiopia from the early 50's to the late 80's and was a popular singer as well as a poet and song writer.
Her transcendental music, which she played during her lifetime, is still very popular among the public and serves as an inspiration and test of potential for many new young female artists.
Hirut Bekele was born on September 28, 1935, to her mother, Mrs. Tananeiwork Mekonen, and to her father, Captain Bekele Knefe, in Addis Ababa.
When she was old enough to go to school, she attended Kebena Mission School and attended her primary education. When Hirut was in school, she used to sing to her classmates and neighborhood children, so her friends who saw her talent encouraged and pushed her to enter the world of music.
Accordingly, in 1951, together with her close friend, she went to the Earth Army's music department and got hired as a singer. Not long after, she got great appreciation and acceptance from the people with the song "Ye Har Sherrit" which she played for the first time.
In 1952, Hirut moved from the Army Music Department to the Police Army Orchestra and was hired as a permanent member of the Music Department.
Among the other songs that Hirut played, "Ethiopia" is one of the nationally known folk songs that are still sung by children and adults with a sense of patriotism.
Hirut Bekele not only performed her civic duty efficiently by being present wherever her mother country called her, but also went to the Ethiopian peacekeeping army station that marched in the Congo and performed her popular music that inspired the army.
During the Derg era, she traveled to many socialist countries, including Russia, and contributed to the promotion of Ethiopian music. Apart from that, in the war against Somali invading forces in Eastern Ethiopia and Shabia in Northern Ethiopia, she performed her duty by being in the middle of the army together with her colleagues and performing rousing music.
Hirut has been serving the army and the people of Ethiopia sincerely for 35 years. In these 35 years, she has played more than 200 songs and brought them to the public, including more than 38 in clay. She published 14 songs on cassette and gave them to her music lovers.
During her many years in the music world, Hirut has been presenting her work to the public with Mahmoud Ahmed, Alemayhe Eshete, Tewodros Tadese, Melkimu Tebeje, Tadele Bekele, Mesfen Haile, Kasahun Germamo and other singers.
Hirut Bekele has received many awards and recognition certificates from home and abroad for her great contribution to her mother country in the field of music.
