The loss of a seaport that was an economic disaster for Ethiopia

Former TPLF central member and Tigray Regional State President Ato Gebru Asrat lamented the anti-unity stance of the time in his book titled “Sovereignty and Democracy in Ethiopia”.

“Those of us in the senior leadership at the time should have known that the seaport issue was essential to Ethiopia’s survival and we should have stood up and argued openly and decisively,” he said, taking responsibility for not understanding the feelings of the people.

He said that they should have understood the feelings of the people at the time and stood up for Ethiopia’s seaport; he said that they would take responsibility for not doing so. 

Since that was not done at the time, billions of dollars have been spent on port services instead of developing the country and filling the coffers of others.

The loss of a seaport has been an economic disaster for Ethiopia. On the other hand, the way in which the country lost its historical and natural rights to the Red Sea is not appropriate in terms of international law.

The generation that has been waiting for a convenient opportunity to raise the question of the sea port, deprived of its own leaders, has begun to challenge its long-standing question in a proper way.

Former Navy member Master Chief Zerihun Weyesa, recalling the maritime activities that Ethiopia was doing at the time; regretfully says that if it had been coordinated with the economic activities in the country now, it would have been able to have a strong economy.

Former Navy member Leading Seaman Tefera also points out that Ethiopian ports were huge ports where large activities were carried out in addition to facilitating import and export trade.

Leading Seaman Tefera added that during his stay with EBC, Ethiopia had many of its own resources, including an oil refinery in Asab.
