The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has stated that buses providing public transportation services in Addis Ababa are not adequately accommodating people with disabilities.
The EHRC has also assessed that the corridor developments built and under construction in Addis Ababa are not fully accessible to people with disabilities.
Commissioner Rigbe Gebrehawariat, who serves as the EHRC Commissioner for Women, Children, People with Disabilities, and the Elderly, said that the failure of service-providing institutions to operate in a way that prioritizes people with disabilities stems from a lack of accountability.
She noted that while buses are designed with people with disabilities in mind, their ability to access services depends on the goodwill of drivers rather than being recognized as a right.
She added that the lack of accountability for drivers who fail to provide this service has contributed to the worsening of the problem.
The EHRC pointed out that although buses in Addis Ababa are intended to be accessible to people with disabilities, they are rarely utilized by them. The commission raised this issue with the Addis Ababa City Public Bus Service Enterprise.
In response, Mr. Akalu Assefa, the General Manager of the Addis Ababa City Public Bus Service Enterprise, stated, "As far as I know, we are providing proper services to people with disabilities."
He acknowledged that there are some drivers with ethical issues and said that corrective measures are being taken against those identified as having such problems, based on feedback received through the toll-free number 8991.
