Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced that a plan has been prepared to build a fertilizer factory in Ethiopia.
Based on studies conducted in previous years, the Prime Minister explained that the construction of the #fertilizer_factory is estimated to cost between 2.5 and 3 billion dollars.
"Now, as you know, the Renaissance issue is ongoing, so we will turn our Renaissance focus toward fertilizer," he said.
"If we work very hard, the construction of the fertilizer factory will take at least three years or more," the Prime Minister stated, adding, "The second Renaissance will be this fertilizer factory."
He further noted, "If possible, the construction should be carried out in collaboration with the private sector or through private investment. If not, the government must build a fertilizer factory capable of meeting Ethiopia’s needs, and perhaps the significant work will begin next year."
The Prime Minister explained that the government is providing a subsidy of 3,700 birr per quintal of fertilizer to farmers, and through this, the government has subsidized 84 billion birr.
He mentioned that 24 million quintals of soil fertilizer are needed this year, and 150,000 quintals of fertilizer are being transported from the port daily.
In addition, he said the government is using #military support to transport fertilizer to the districts.
As an example, he explained that last year in the Amhara region, 7,000 trucks of fertilizer were escorted by the military to ensure they reached farmers.
It is recalled that earlier attempts to build a fertilizer factory in Ethiopia (the Yayu fertilizer factory) had begun, with billions of birr spent, but the project stalled.
Metec had signed a contract in 2011/12 E.C. to build the planned Yayu fertilizer factory in the Yayu area of Western Oromia, which was expected to have the capacity to produce 300,000 tons of urea fertilizer annually.
