UK seeks to strengthen bilateral ties with Ethiopia

The UK has expressed its desire to strengthen and work together with Ethiopia.

The Minister of Women and Social Affairs, Ergoge Tesfaye (Dr.), held talks with the British Ambassador to Ethiopia, Darren Welch, and his high-level delegation.

During the talks, they discussed social protection and inclusion, women’s rights and gender equality, women’s contribution to peacebuilding and conflict resolution, women’s economic empowerment, and the prevention of female genital mutilation and gender-based violence.

The Minister explained that the Ministry is also implementing a number of activities related to the issues of women, children and youth, as well as people with disabilities, the elderly and other vulnerable groups.

Stating that the prevailing social stereotypes, lack of information and limited resources have prevented gender equality from being achieved, she stressed the need to work together to address the problem.

The Minister thanked the British Government for its direct and indirect support for social protection, gender equality and the empowerment of vulnerable groups in Ethiopia.

British Ambassador Darren Welch, for his part, praised the Ministry for its extensive work in line with its mandate.

The Ambassador further stated that his country is looking forward to further strengthening the partnership and working together in the aforementioned and other areas, according to information received from the Ministry.
