Safaricom Ethiopia has agreed to send free short text messages to youth as part of UNICEF’s U-Report program.
U-Report, a global initiative developed by UNICEF, is a messaging platform designed to raise awareness among youth, enabling them to participate in activities that promote social development, such as responding to emergencies and providing support.
Globally, the system operates in 99 countries with over 36.1 million users and works to bring about change for youth. In Ethiopia, it was launched in January of last year and reportedly has more than 17,000 members to date.
The agreement ensures that young members of the system can receive messages free of charge for one year.
This partnership is said to demonstrate Safaricom Ethiopia’s commitment to supporting youth, particularly enabling those in rural areas to access vital information and communicate more effectively with those around them.
It provides an opportunity to disseminate information focused on education, health, and social development, and it is said to take into account those without access to advanced phone devices.
