Out of 200 species of fish, only six are marketed

#Ethiopia The Ministry of Agriculture announced that only six of the more than 200 species of fish in Ethiopia are marketed.

According to Dr. Fasil Dawit, Head of Fisheries Development Desk at the Ministry of Agriculture; Many natural and artificial water bodies in Ethiopia contain more than 200 species of fish.

According to Dr. Faasil, although there are lakes and dams suitable for fish farming in the country, there are not more than six species in the market.

He informed that the most commonly marketed species are Nile Perch, Tilapia, Bagrus, Barbus, Catfish and Carp.

Doctor Fasil said that 40 of the more than 200 species of fish in Ethiopia are rare species found only in Ethiopia. He pointed out that the Ministry of Agriculture is making efforts to develop the sector.

Dr. Fasil said that fish farming is a sector that can generate a lot of income. In the last 10 months of the fiscal year, 88.8 thousand tons of fish were produced.

He said that although it is possible to produce 90 percent of the annual production, the production obtained is not enough, so it should be worked with attention.

He pointed out that due to the low culture of fish feeding, the product could not be used as needed. He explained that the Ministry of Agriculture is trying to bring about a change in awareness by presenting demonstration experiences in various platforms.

As Dr. Fasil announced; Comparatively, Gambella and Benishangul Gumuz regions are regions with better fish breeding and nutrition. Apart from the six commercial fish species, other species are used for food consumption.

He pointed out that the use of illegal fishing, non-use of modern equipment, lack of supply of fish feed for breeding and the failure of fish breeding centers to work at their full capacity are the challenges to prevent better development in the sector.

Illegal fishing nets have a narrow opening and catch fish that are not ready for consumption, thus creating a risk to productivity; He said that awareness activities are being done to prevent the problem.

They also stated that the lack of harvesting sites and transport vehicles have made the production process inefficient.

He announced that efforts are being made to establish centers for the development of improved species in the development of fish resources and to organize fishermen in a legal and modern way.
