In Addis Ababa, a national recognition program was held for traffic policemen, drivers and institutions who contributed better to the reduction of vehicle accidents and road safety.
Minister of Transport and Logistics Alemu Sme (Dr.), religious leaders, elders and invited guests were present at the program.
In his speech on the program, Dr. Alemu Sme showed a tendency to reduce the number of citizens who lost their lives in vehicle accidents in the last four years, but still a lot needs to be done.
EZA reported that drivers not following the rules and regulations and driving without adequate training are among the problems mentioned.
They also pointed out that the lack of strengthening of technology-assisted control work and the appearance of gaps are among the reasons that prevent vehicle accidents from being reduced to the desired level.
According to Jamal Abbaso, CEO of Road Safety and Insurance Fund Services, the results of the work done to reduce the risk in Ethiopia are being recorded.
In 2010, when there were 936 thousand vehicles, 5 thousand 118 citizens died.
He pointed out that the number of vehicles increased to 1.4 million in 2015. He mentioned that the number of people who died in car accidents was 3 thousand 577.
He said efforts are being made to implement awareness activities to reduce the number of citizens who lose their lives due to accidents.
