68 percent of the planned fertilizer has reached the farmers during the production season - Dr. Girma Amente

The Minister of Agriculture Girma Amente (Dr.) announced in a press conference on current agricultural issues that 68 percent of the fertilizer planned for the crop season has reached the hands of the farmers.

 

He said that 13.6 million quintals of the 20 million quintals allocated for the 2015/16 harvest season have been procured, of which 11.9 million quintals (87%) have arrived in Djibouti.

 

Out of 11.9 million quintals, 10.7 million quintals (89.7%) were transported to the country, the minister said.

 

The minister pointed out that 2 million Urea will be transported to Djibouti soon.

 

He said that he will work with the concerned bodies to control illegal activities that are snatched from the throats of the farmers during the fertilizer distribution process and to take legal action.

 

The Minister stated that the amount of money purchased for fertilizer for the production period is 1 billion dollars.

 

Dr. Girma stated that the current fertilizer procurement system is unstable and that a system will be prepared and put into operation to quickly buy and supply fertilizer for 3 years at a time, according to the information of the Ministry of Agriculture.
