90s musicians contribute to African Union anthem

 

Addis Ababa, February 11, 2017 (FMC) The 90s musicians came together to sing a beautiful anthem that has been etched in the hearts of many.

 

The time was when the Organization of African Unity, which was established to promote unity and cooperation among African nations and to fight colonialism, was transformed into the African Union. 

 

Following the establishment of the union, Zelalem Mekuria, a lyricist and composer who thought about what was expected of him, set out to compose a new anthem for the African Union. 

 

He says that when he set out to do this at the time, he started by reading the founding document of the Organization of African Unity and the then new African Union. 

 

It was then that Zelalem composed the lyrics and melody for the anthem, “New Thought,” which shows the fear in Africa and the hope we have in the darkness.

 

Then, he went to Eliyasa Melka, a composer, songwriter, and poet, and coordinated with famous singers at the time, and the music was completed in three days.

 

Zelalem Mekuria says that Madingo Afework, Michael Belayneh, Tegust Fantahun, Gosaye Tesfaye, Berhanu Tezera, Tadele Roba, Samvod, and Haileye Tadesse participated in this music.

 

The musician, who currently claims that the music has sound and image quality problems, also says that since it was made for the African Union, he plans to work with other African musicians again.
