#Ethiopia The Confederation of Ethiopian Workers' Unions (ISMACO) has announced that it has submitted the matter to the House of People's Representatives despite years of requests for the establishment of a wage board that determines the minimum wage floor.

ESMACO president Kasahun Folo stated that the employer and employee decree 1156/2011 stipulates that a "wage board" should be established to determine the minimum wage, but the years-old decree to establish a "wage board" is still falling on deaf ears when it is expected to improve the living conditions of low-paid workers.

Ato Kasahun explained that although ISMACO has tried to bring the matter to the attention of the Ministry of Labor and Skills and the Prime Minister's Office, they have still not been able to get a response to the issue of low-skilled workers.

He added that although ISAMACO has submitted a request to get the attention of the relevant government institutions following the appropriate order, but as he has not received a response, he has submitted a petition to the House of Representatives.

He stated that the question has been submitted to the concerned members of the Parliament's Standing Committee and said, "We are waiting for their response."

ISEMACO had planned to present a peaceful demonstration on May Day, which is celebrated every year, so that the pressure on the workers due to the high cost of living can be solved and the minimum wage rate should be improved, but it was unsuccessful.

The president explained that although the questions that were supposed to be raised during the peaceful demonstration were submitted to the relevant parties, the crucial question of the survival of the workers was not resolved beyond allowing the advisory board of employers and workers to return to work.

We will not remain silent until the issue of workers' livelihood is resolved," said the president. "We will work to find a solution using other legal options."

For his part, Dr. Tekelani Ayaleu, executive officer of the Ministry of Labor and Skills, said that the establishment of a wage board has its own negative and positive sides.
