The African Development Bank has approved a loan of 26 million euros for the Ethio-Kenya electricity line

Addis Ababa, June 27, 2015 (FBC) The African Development Bank has approved a 26 million euro loan for the construction of an underground electricity transmission line from Ethiopia to Kenya.

It is said that the 16.5 km long underground transmission line has a carrying capacity of 132 kV.

It is said to connect the Nanyuki and Rumuruthi substations.

The construction of the substations is expected to be completed before the closure of next year.

The African Development Bank has indicated that a project contract has been signed between the two countries and preliminary design work is being done.

It was observed that Kenya wanted to borrow from the bank to carry out the construction because of the growth in the country's demand for energy supply.

It is indicated by the information that the decision to start the line was made after analyzing the feasibility of the cost.

The bank's information indicates that the current power transmission line construction project will be carried out after the Mariakani substation, which has a capacity of 400 KV, is completed and started working in January.

It has also been observed that Kenya started buying electricity from Ethiopia last year through competitive bidding due to the growing energy consumption of the country.

The two countries have signed a 25-year electricity supply agreement.
