In Addis Ababa, over the past month, institutions and individuals who were reported to have disposed of sewage and waste in a manner that pollutes rivers and the environment have collectively paid fines totaling 80 million birr, following the implementation of regulations on riverbank development and pollution prevention.
Among them, one institution was reportedly fined 1 million birr. The regulatory office stated that the fines are bringing about change, particularly for institutions that release untreated sewage and waste into rivers.
The Addis Ababa Environmental Protection Authority noted that improvements have been observed since stricter measures were taken against individuals and institutions previously polluting rivers and the environment with sewage.
Mr. Dida Diriba, the Director General of the Addis Ababa Environmental Protection Authority, stated that extensive awareness campaigns were conducted at various times before the regulation prohibiting individuals and institutions from polluting rivers and the environment with sewage was enforced.
He also mentioned that some institutions, particularly factories, hospitals, and hotels, are reluctant to incur costs for building septic tanks or making other necessary adjustments to prevent river pollution.
Since actions began against those violating the law, Mr. Dida noted that both organizations and individuals have started constructing their own sewage disposal systems or septic tanks to ensure that toilets and waste do not contaminate rivers.
