Plastic manufacturers are being supported to produce alternative products to the banned plastic bags, the Addis Ababa Environmental Protection Authority said.
The authority said that if they were to produce products that replace plastic, they would not face economic problems.
The recently approved Solid Waste Management and Disposal Proclamation by the House of Representatives did not include the words #ClosePlastic_Factories, Do Not Use Plastic Completely. The authority said that the Proclamation only banned single-use plastic bags.
Despite the authority’s statement, we previously reported that the Ethiopian Plastic and Rubber Manufacturers Association said that there are no single-use plastic bags.
Ato Dida Diriba is the General Manager of the Addis Ababa City Environmental Protection Authority.
He said that they are ready to implement the provisions of the Solid Waste Management and Disposal Proclamation, which was recently approved by the House of Representatives, when it comes to the authority.
Ato Dida said that as an authority, we are carrying out many works to reduce pollution in Addis Ababa and its surroundings, but the high pollution levels in the city for many years have prevented us from achieving the desired results.
