Inflation in Sudan was reported to show a slight decrease in December
The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) announced that Sudan's annual inflation rate decreased from 198.22 percent in December to 187.83 percent in December. However, the country is still in economic decline due to the ongoing conflict, which is said to have caused significant price increases.
Inflation in Sudan was recorded at 211.48% in October and 215.52% in September. In recent months, however, inflation has been gradually coming down. The rate of change in the general price level was recorded as 187.83 percent in December, CBS announced.
The statistics agency reported that urban inflation dropped to 158.62 percent in December from 158.90 percent in November, while rural inflation dropped to 207.17 percent from 225.91 percent in the previous month.
According to CBS, inflation decreased in December in food and beverages, housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, health, transportation, education and miscellaneous goods and services. However, price increases were seen in other areas such as communications and clothing.
The agency's inflation calculation is based on 663 goods and services, which is said to reflect consumption trends in urban and rural areas under different economic, social and geographic conditions. The standards are divided into 12 main categories, with food and beverages taking up the largest share.
Inflation rates in December varied across Sudan's provinces, with CBS reporting increases in Gedarif, Sanar, White Nile, North, South and East Darfur, while West Darfur remained unchanged.
In addition, South Kordofan showed a significant decrease of 99.73%; The Northern Province is said to have seen a decrease of 77.18 percent, and the Nile River Province of 60.82 percent. Senar is the state with the highest increase recorded at 84.02 percent, followed by White Nile with 78.32 percent.
Due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, many Sudanese are suffering from high prices due to the severe damage to their sources of livelihood and income. According to the United Nations, 30.4 million people, or 64% of the population, are in need of humanitarian assistance.
